The Green Jacket Way
.........

What then is the Regiment’s ethos? It is to do with officers who really know and care for their riflemen: a leadership style based on absolute professionalism, self discipline, mutual trust and loyalty; a spirit of self reliance embodied in our historic tradition of the "fighting, thinking rifleman"; a forward looking attitude; a level of competence and military effectiveness which are second to none; and knowledge that all of this comes through hard work and getting the detail right, but without making a meal of it.

It is the way that one does it that really marks a rifleman as different - and that is with a light touch; a sense of humour; style and a spirit of adventure; but without pomposity, without fuss and without any form of rigid formality. It is based on mutual confidence, mutual respect, mutual affection and a love of soldiering. The Green Jacket way combines a light touch with a tight grip; a difficult trick to pull off if relaxed efficiency is not to descend into relaxed inefficiency.

Leadership The Green Jacket Way

"I have the pleasure to observe that this Regiment possesses an excellent spirit and that both officers and men take a pride in doing their duty. Their movement in the field is perfect; it is evident that not only the officers, but that each individual soldier knows perfectly what he has to do; the discipline is carried on without severity: the officers are attached to the men, the men to the officers."
Sir John Moore

"Six years of warfare could not detect a flaw in their system, nor were they matched in courage or skill. These three regiments were obviously the best that England ever had under arms. This is no ideal boast.
Lord Napier

"And what more can I say to you Riflemen that wherever there has been fighting there you have been, and wherever you have been, there you have distinguished yourself.“
King William IV

“They have added another glorious page to the glories of the Light Division”
Sir Winston Churchill

"In The Green Jackets we rightly put the emphasis on self discipline rather than the imposed variety favoured by some others. We seek, by good leadership, example, explaining what we are doing and generally treating those under us with humanity and commonsense, to evoke a loyal response and produce the sense of responsibility needed. This is a policy to be proud of and it has proved to be extremely effective. The end product is more deep seated because it is based on the individuals own will power, and it usually creates a fine atmosphere of trust and mutual respect which manifests itself in a sensible adult approach to problems and a marked absence of crime.

This then is The Green Jacket way - pride in fighting qualities and professional skill, intelligent and humane discipline, sympathy and understanding between all ranks and concern for the individual, for his welfare and for that of his dependants.”
Field Marshall Bramall
